“I have a dream”: in memory of Martin Luther King and John Fitzgerald Kennedy


Ieri era l’anniversario dell’uccisione del presidente americano J.F. Kennedy a Dallas; in pochi anni è riuscito a cambiare il volto dell’America, a lui si deve il “New Deal” e per ricordarlo pubblico il testo di questo celebre discorso tenuto da Martin Luther King, anche lui ucciso cinque anni dopo, sul sogno che condivideva con il presidente Kennedy.

28 agosto 1963 – I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves, who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity. But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacle of segregation and the chains of discrimination.

One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languish in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land So we’ve come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

In a sense we’ve come to our Nation’s Capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.

This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked “insufficient funds.”

But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation. So we have come to cash this check, a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.

Anziani: non è mai tardi per raggiungere un sogno di libertà


I have a dreamNon è mai troppo tardi per cambiare vita. Per realizzare un sogno. Per cercare il benessere dentro un futuro che abbiamo sempre desiderato. Una fase della vita adatta a grandi e importanti cambiamenti sono gli anni dopo il sessantesimo compleanno, quando si è vicini all’andare in pensione o si è appena detto addio al lavoro. È in questo il periodo ideale per dare una svolta decisa, in particolare quando per tanti anni abbiamo pensato sempre e a volte solo alla nostra famiglia, agli impegni e ai doveri dettati dal nostro ruolo di genitori, mariti, mogli, padri e figli. E così, seguendo l’esempio di P.Coletta, blogger americana overanta che si racconta dalle pagine della community over50 di Let life in, “cambiamo la nostra vita prima che sia troppo tardi”. Il suo articolo racconta di come dopo una vita intera dedicata alla legge ha deciso di seguire il suo sogno, partire per il Far West. Ma ancora più interessante è leggere le sue motivazioni: basta con sensi di colpa, perdite di tempo e sensazioni di essere spremuti, squeezed. Chi ci ama capirà, come dice lei, comprenderà la nostra corsa verso i sogni.
