The party of the air: Augusta’s airships hangar opens again

di Daniela Domenici

As to underline the title given to this party yesterday and today a strong wind has accompanied the re-opening, after decades of abandon and waste, of the airships hangar and of the green space surrounding it just outside Augusta by the “Hangar Team” association led by Ilario Saccomanno, who is a former teacher and is now the “soul” and the “engine” of this operation.
Augusta’s airships hangar, for those who don’t know anything about it, is a building of high pioneering engineer ability, built between November 1917 and the end of 1920, which has hosted airships for recognition and sightseeing and has remained one of the few in the world still standing even if, of course, with visible and touchable signals of abandon on it.
Yesterday and today the green space around the hangar has been “invaded” in a pacific and joyous way by thousands of people who has been waiting to use this “green lung” of their town for decades; it has been a real party which has taken place in a good way thanks, above all, to the perfect organization of the volunteers of Hangar Team association.
